Fine pins are inserted into a component called the cylinder, according to the tune. The position of each pin determines when a note sounds.

The inserted pins are carefully polished to prepare the parts that produce the music. The arranged melody takes physical form in the playing mechanism.

Turning a Melody into a MechanismThe arrangement of the tiny pins determines the order and timing of the notes.

The sound comes from the music-box comb, a metal component shaped like a comb. Its teeth vibrate and produce notes when plucked by the pins on the cylinder.

A craftsperson listens carefully while adjusting the comb, refining the pitch and resonance of each note.

Refining Each NoteEach tooth of the comb is adjusted to the required pitch.

Bringing the parts together, refining the sound.

This stage adjusts the position of the cylinder pins in relation to the comb teeth. With the parts assembled, a craftsperson listens to each note and refines how the pins engage with the teeth.

The performance is checked as a series of fine adjustments brings it to completion.
