Surrounded by Lake Suwa and mountains, Suwa in Nagano has nurtured precision manufacturing. Our history of music box making also began here.
SINCE 1946 · SUWA
Sankyo Seiki Manufacturing was founded in Suwa in 1946. Its first prototype music box was completed in 1948, and mass production was established in 1950.
In this region rooted in precision manufacturing, engineers and craftspeople have repeatedly developed prototypes and refinements in pursuit of more beautiful sound. Mechanical precision matters, but the final sound is determined by human ears and hands.
The experience and skills accumulated over many years live on in today's ORPHEUS music boxes.
HERITAGE OF JAPANESE MUSIC BOXES
An early Japanese-made 18-note music box movement, estimated to have been manufactured around 1951 by Sankyo Seiki Manufacturing (now NIDEC Instruments), was recognized in 2026 as Mechanical Engineering Heritage No. 135 by the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers.
This recognition applies to a historic Japanese-made music box movement, not to the ORPHEUS models currently on sale. The craftsmanship and history from which it originated continue to be passed down today.
